Achter Rubatong gaat een bonte verzameling van Nederlandse top-avant-garde muzikanten schuil. De avant-punk die ze in deze bezetting spelen doet denken aan ongepolijstje juweeltjes van Einstürzende Neubauten, Pere Ubu en Captain Beefheart. De zang van ex-Palinckx lid Han Buhrs ontmoet het hoekige spel van Urban Dance Squad gitarist René van Barneveld. De bas van Luc Ex zwerft vrij rond, terwijl sterslagwerkster Tatiana Koleva warme kleuren uit haar vibrafoon tovert. Het resultaat is soms verstild, maar vaak druk en chaotisch. Kost voor de muzikale avonturier!

Tatiana Koleva (vibes / percussion) has appeared as a soloist of various orchestras and regularly performs with leading contemporary music ensembles and theater groups. Next to her activities as a classical musician she is often involved in cross-genre projects with improvised jazz, rock and film music. Tatiana studied piano and percussion in her home city Varna, Bulgaria and continued her education at the Music Academy Sofia, and the Conservatories of Rotterdam and The Hague. She has performed various premieres of scores by a range of composers, amongst them Louis Andriessen.
Luc Ex (bass guitar) was, untill 2002, one of the driving forces in The Ex, the group known for its unconventional interpretation of various musical styles.The Ex won the Dutch BV Popprijs in 1991.The band worked with a wide range of musicians and other artists. Amongst them Dutch improvisors such as Han Bennink, the American celloplayer Tom Cora, the Belgian arbsurdist Kamagurka and popgroups like Tortoise and Sonic Youth. Luc Ex also toured with Roof (with Tom Cora and Phil Minton) later reformed into 4 Walls. He presently plays in groups as SOL6 & 12 and ‘Triolex’and member of Franz Hautzingers Regenorchestre (with a.o. Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide).
René van Barneveld (guitar) is known worldwide as guitarist Tres Manos from Urban Dance Squad, one of the first rockbands that played with a rapper and a deejay. UDS exsisted from 1986 untill 2000 and played all important rockfestivals in Europe and the US. The band received the Dutch BV Popprijs in 1990 and their single Deeper Shade of Soul got a 21st position in the Billboard Hot 100 (US) that same year. Since 2000 René van Barneveld has performed in a wide range of musical projects, varying from rocksinger Anouk, Sjako!, Yearlings and the improvising rockgroup Palinckx. He teaches at the rock department of the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory.
Han Buhrs (vocals) invited Tatiana Kolleva, Luc Ex and Rene van Barneveld to form Rubatong for his Carte Blanche evening at the Amsterdam Bimhuis in 2006. Apart from being an improviser Buhrs has since 1984 been active in various fields such as (sound-)poetry, contemporary music, rock, theatre, dance and artmanifestations. He presently plays with Luc Houtkamps Pow Ensemble. In the past initiated groups like: The Schismatics (1983-1997), Nine Tobs, Sumbur, Diftong. Worked with Palinckx (1997-2007). ‘Incidentals’ with Asko Ensemble (classical), Dutch Vocal Laboratory (classical vox), Ernst Reijseger, Misha Mengelberg, Johannes Bauer, The Ex Orkest, Han Bennink, Joseph Bowie, etc. Winner of Podiumaward Dutch Jazz Foundation in 1993.
